Black Crowned Night Herons at Weymouth Herring Run

It's that time of year again where the herring are returning to Whitman's Pond in Weymouth MA from the Atlantic Ocean along the Carolina Coastline. I always enjoy photographing this phenomenon of nature and this rite of Spring.

Here are a few photos of Black Crowned Night Herons along the run:

  1. Beautiful
Neat to see in photo. I haven't seen one in real life.

    1. Thank you Salty. It's one of the few places I've ever seen them as well. But every Spring, without a doubt, I know I will see them at the Herring Run.

  2. I used to see these birds in Harwich sitting hunched over on tree branches. Never saw them in action the way you have captured this one. I like the one with water drips from beak & then preparing for take-off. Nice action on bird; love the orange beady eye!

    1. Thank you Cynthia. I was hoping when it bent over for a drink that it would come up with a fish but no such luck. One of these days.....
