Nesting Swans

The last blog post was about the nesting Ospreys, and today's blog post is about the nesting swans that I have been visiting over the past week.

Wampatuck Pond in Hanson has a nesting pair of swans. The nest can be viewed from across the pond. This was taken with my 300 mm lens.

Hope to see some cygnets within the coming weeks.

Nesting Osprey At Nelson Park Plymouth MA

As mentioned previously, I really enjoy photographing the different wildlife in the Spring. As you probably know, the Fall is my favorite time of year for photography, but the Spring comes in a close second.

I visited the Osprey nest at Nelson Park in Plymouth one chilly and very windy morning last week. It was so windy in fact, that I ended up with a wind burn on my face! The osprey didn't seem to mind the wind at all.

Dad returned home with breakfast......

He stopped for his share of the catch on a nearby pole....

I returned to the nest a few hours later on my way home, as you can tell by the change in the light, and dad was off the nest again in search of lunch.

Bald Eagle

Happy weekend to you.......the sun is shining and the temperatures are going to be almost seasonably......a very rare thing this Spring here in New England.

Yesterday was also a beautiful day, except it was chilly and there was a strong cold wind blowing as I was taking photos down in Plymouth MA. Had some success photographing several different types of birds, but the highlight of my day was this Bald Eagle that we saw. It was pretty exciting for me, as I've seen and photographed Bald Eagles in Maine on a few occasions, but have never seen one here in Massachusetts.

Early Arrival Herring, Oliver Mill Park Middleboro MA

I just love the Spring Season. Each year I look forward to the arrival of the Herring, the newborn fox kits, cygnets, ducklings, and chicks, and love to watch the Earth wake up from it's long Winter's nap. As noted in previous blog posts, the weather this Spring has been more Winter like than Spring like thus far, but thankfully we are starting to see some of the early signs of Spring here in Southern New England.

The other day (during a light dusting of snow of course!) I went down to Oliver Mills Park in Middleboro MA to look for any early arrival Herring.

Typically the herring are visible in the water during the height of the run, but none were visible as of yet. However, there were a few gulls milling around in the water......and I knew all too well that they wouldn't have been in that freezing cold water if there wasn't a chance of them getting something to eat. So I waited........and waited.........At one point one of them dove in the water and came up with nothing....but this was a good sign for me that this was a missed opportunity and if I waited long enough one of them would come up with a catch. So I waited some more and then this happened!

It's still early in the season, but I'm pumped and looking forward to be spending a lot of time at the local Herring Runs within the next few weeks.

April Snow Middleboro MA

It went away just as quickly as it came!! Yesterday morning brought some beautiful snow to Southern New England. It was the kind of very wet snow, with big flakes, that stick to the trees and grass, but because the roads were warm it didn't really stick to them. The Temperature hung around the 32 degree mark and once the temperature warmed up by just a few degrees the snow disappeared in an instant, as though it never really happened. The perfect storm in my opinion!
