There is a Great Blue Heron Rookery at Lyons Cutler Reservation along the Allowance Brook in Sudbury MA. I was led there by a member of my camera club one day last week. It was one of the few nice Spring days that we've had so far this year.
We parked in a small lot and followed the trail to where the rookery is located. It was a lovely walk, approximately a mile one way, through forest and fields. There were some wet and muddy areas that we needed to traverse. Some of these wet areas had small boardwalks to cross, and others we needed to go a bit off the trail to get around them. These areas were more or less big puddles resulting from the incessant rain we've been getting lately.
We made our way to the river:
There are four occupied nests. It will be fun to go back when the babies are born. There should be a lot more activity going on with the babies and the parents.
As you can see from the following photo, a very long lens is needed to photograph the birds, or binoulars are needed for just viewing. I was using my Nikon D7100 with the Tamron 150-600 lens. This provided me enough reach. This photo was taken with my cell phone:
This Red Wing Black Bird stopped nearby the nest for a bit of a rest. You can see the size of the nest compared to the RWB Bird as scale.
Another reason to love photography in the Spring!
