Over the next several weeks, I will be posting travel photos taken from outside of New England from a recent trip to Alaska.
Mr S and I took an 11 day trip and it was fantastic. Day one and day 11 were travel days. There are no direct flights from Boston, so we stopped for a three hour layover in Seattle, changed planes, and had another 3 1/3 hour ride to Anchorage. It's a 4 hour time difference, which made for a very long day. But boy was it worth it.
Day 2 We had breakfast at the hotel and picked up the car rental. We rented an SUV and it was perfect. We then went to the Walmart in Anchorage and picked up an online order I had placed for snacks and a few other things we would need.....and then hit the road for a four hour trip up to Healy. It was a mostly rainy drive, but I was able to stop and take a few photos along the way.
The first stop of the day was to Mirror Lake, which is located just outside of Anchorage. I was lucky to have found a fly fisherman wearing red, which made a great subject in my photos.
These next images were all taken along the Parks Highway as we headed North.
After a delicious lunch at a small sandwich shop in Cantwell, called Jam Jam's Spot, we arrived an hour later to the Lakeview Inn in Healy Alaska. I chose this spot because it's located on a beautiful lake about 10 miles North of Denali National Park. The views and wildlife were amazing. Each room has a private balcony overlooking the lake. It was perfect.
As you can see, the Fall colors of the tundra were starting to change, and as each day progressed, the colors got better.
We then went to the 49th State Brewing in Healy for drinks and dinner. I had the halibut tacos, and Mr S had a chicken quesadilla. Both were delicious and the halibut was fresh caught. So good!
When we returned to the inn after dinner, there was a rainbow over the lake. I took this as a sign,:-)
Shortly after the rainbow disappeared, I stepped out on the deck to find a cow moose right outside the room. I took this as another sign, :-)
We were off to a great start. Stay tuned for day 3.
