Boott Cotton Mill, Lowell MA

Yesterday I had the pleasure of touring and photographing a beautiful old mill in Lowell MA. Boott Cotton Mill was built in 1835 alongside a power canal. Lowell was a very important mill town during this time period. The New England textile industry declined after World War 1, and it collapsed after World War 2. This mill eventually became part of The Lowell National Historic Park.

The machines:

The Fire Buckets hanging on the wall. Notice how the bottom of the bucket is pointed, not flat. The owners of the mill had the buckets made this way so that the workers couldn't turn the buckets over and sit on them. They had to stand during their entire work day.

Nor'Easter, Hull MA

We had a Nor'Easter hit the area earlier this week. I went down to the coast to capture some photos.

I arrived an hour and a half after high tide, and there was still some splash over from the high waves.

High waves rolling in onto the beach....

High waves breaking behind this gull, who was holding on for his life in the strong winds.

Travel Tuesday/Frenchtown New Jersey

                                          ********TRAVEL TUESDAY********

Today is a "travel Tuesday" here on the blog, where images taken outside of New England will be shown. During our recent visit to New Jersey, our friends took us to Frenchtown....a very quaint little borough located along the shore of the Delaware River. The bucolic beauty of this little town made me feel as though I had stepped into a quaint little European town.

Even on a chilly December morning, the charm of this special little town can not be denied.

As we strolled through this town, and stopped at a few small charming boutiques, we ended up at the edge of town, where the Uhlerstown Frenchtown Bridge spans the Deleware River.

Standing in Frenchtown at the end of the bridge, you can see Pennsylvania at the other end of the bridge.

I have to tell you that New Jersey totally surprised me with it's beauty.

Liberty State Park, Jersey City New Jersey

Sorry for my absence over the past several days. I was away visiting some very good friends who moved to New Jersey. Today's blog post doesn't feature any scenes from New England.....but I want to share with you some of the places that I visited and photographed over the past few days. We will start this series of blog posts with photos I took at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

It was a very windy and very chilly grey January day. Wish that I had gotten some better skies to photograph, but I did the best with what I had. This is a beautiful well maintained park that I can picture bustling with people and activity on a day with nicer weather, but on this particular cold and dreary day we had the place almost to ourselves.

We were just across the water from Ellis Island

As well as The Statue Of Liberty

More images taken from Jersey City will be shown in an upcoming blog post.

Great Blue Heron

Well, I failed to find a Snowy Owl again....I went out searching again yesterday. I did however find this beautiful Great Blue Heron who was in very close proximity to me.

Someone came along in a pick up truck, and I knew that the noise would scare the heron away. I was ready to get the flight shots......,

It would have been nice to get some Snowy Owl shots, but I am pretty happy to have gotten the "runner up" shots instead.

One of these days you will see some snowy owl shots here on the blog.......and if you don't see any by Winters end, it won't be due to a lack of trying.

The Road To Saquish, Duxbury MA

As you can see from a few of my recent blog posts, I've recently been spending some time photographing in Duxbury MA. The reason for this is because I've been looking out for a Snowy Owl to photograph. Haven't found one....yet......this year, but I'm determined to eventually find one. In the meantime, I've photographed a few other birds and some landscapes etc.

Yesterday we got a few beautiful inches of snow here in SE MA, so I went down to Duxbury in the late afternoon. I still didn't find any owls, but the recent snowfall combined with some beautiful late day skies, provided me an opportunity to make some landscapes images.

Snowy Owls reside in the desolate land in the Arctic throughout most of the year, but in the Winter they travel South to live in wide open spaces that remind them of their home in the Arctic Tundra. The owls that reside in Duxbury Beach typically fly to Logan Airport in Boston each year, and are caught and relocated to places such as Duxbury Beach, where it is a safer place for both the owls and the air traffic at the airport.

This image gives you a good example of the wide open spaces near Duxbury Beach that remind the owls of their "home" environment.

Kitesurfing

Brrrrrr! I give these two guys a lot of credit for following what must be their passion. I know that I was freezing just being outside shooting with my camera on this very cold and very blustery Winter day in Duxbury MA.

2016 A Year In Review

Happy New Year!!!!!! Each new year I post my personal favorite images that I have taken the year before. These images are ones that invoke an emotional response for me. Some may not be technically perfect, but I am a photographer who needs to "feel" something when looking at my own images. That's what makes me happy and keeps me shooting.

The Winter of 2016 began with a New Years weekend trip to my beloved VT. One of my favorite images that I took that weekend is this landscape taken as the sun was setting on what was a very cloudy day.

This next image was taken in February during a snowstorm in my hometown of Abington MA. I drove down to our local pond (Island Grove) at the beginning of the storm before the roads got too bad and captured this seagull in flight getting ready to make a landing.

The Spring of 2016 brought many photo opportunities. Here is a Herring making it's way upstream to spawn at Whiman's Pond in Weymouth MA.

This next image was also taken in April at the Estuary in Weymouth. I am happy to tell you that I was contacted by a consultant representing the town of Weymouth, and I have given my permission for this image of an osprey in flight to be used on a message board at the start of a new walking trail system that is being built at the estuary.

The highlight of the Spring was the birth of our Grandson Henry. This image was taken just after Henry was born, as he was doing skin to skin contact with his mom.

What can I say about the fox den in my backyard this Spring! I got so much enjoyment from this family.

And here is "Mama". She and I had a wonderful understanding of each other.

The Summer of 2016 brought some opportunities to do some night sky photography. Here is the Milky Way reflecting in May Pond in Barton VT.

My friend Wayne lighting the night sky with a flashlight at Windswept Farm in Barton VT as the Milky Way was rising over the gothic barn.

This was another fun evening of shooting the Milky Way over the Foster Covered Bridge in Cabot VT.

From the country to the city.......this is the Zakim Bridge in Boston

Sunflowers in August....

Which brings us to my favorite season of Fall. Here is Lake Willoughby in Westmore VT on a dreary drizzly Fall day.

A Stand of birch trees dressed in it's Autumn finest.

Rocky Gorge along The Kankamagus Highway in NH

A late day panorama made at Crystal Lake in Barton VT

The birth of our Grandson Stevie was the highlight of the Fall. I love the happiness on big sister Ryleigh's face in this picture and I just want to bite Stevie's cheeks!

Finally, November of 2016 bright the Super Moon. Here it is rising over Hull MA.

I wish you peace, love, good health, and happiness in 2017. Thank you so much for following this blog throughout the year.
