Snowy Owl, Duxbury MA

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to Duxbury Beach in search of Snowy Owls. From what I have heard, there are two Snowys there this Winter. The owls are relocated each year from Logan Airport where they are drawn to the flat open space, which reminds them of the tundra where they reside throughout the rest of the year.

It wasn't long before we saw this female sitting on a post:

After a while she flew off to to catch something to eat. She was pretty far away so not sure what she caught. You can see her spitting snow out of her mouth in this next photo.

From here she decided to take off and land along one of the dunes. This was the closest she came:

A couple of trucks came along and once again she took off in flight:

She decided she was tired....

And she snoozed off and on sitting on the dune.

We left her here to rest. It's always an amazing experience to witness these beautiful birds in the wild. As always, click the photos for a larger view of this beautiful girl.

  1. So glad, Carol, that you found this owl and took such fine photos of it. I especially like the one with the yawn & the one with wide-spread wings!

  2. Wow! Beautiful photos. The next to last one looks like she's yelling at the trucks.
